The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent and the three purple candles symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and good works. The pink candle is lit on the third Sunday, which is called Gaudete Sunday. In addition to the purple and pink candle, the modern day adaption includes a white candle placed in the middle of the wreath, which represents Christ, it is lit on Christmas Eve.
